Surfing and kiting in the Baltic Sea - Spotcheck Kühlungsborn (Kübo) - Ben*s Blog

Kühlungsborn, the charming Baltic Sea resort, offers not only picturesque beaches and a charming coastal landscape, but also a long-standing surfing scene that attracts surfers from the region and beyond. Located between Wismar and Rostock, Kühlungsborn offers some fantastic (underrated) conditions for surfers, kitesurfers, and windsurfers. In this blog post, I take a closer look at surfing in Kühlungsborn and the diverse surfing conditions the town has to offer.

Kühlungsborn's surf spots

1. Beach section Kühlungsborn-West:

Unfortunately, there is no direct parking space here, but there are parking spaces in a new development on the very edge of Kühlungsborn. The western stretch of beach in Kühlungsborn is known for its gentle Baltic Sea waves, which are ideal for beginners. Waves of up to 2 m are possible here, some of which are very nice for the Baltic Sea. With westerly and northerly winds, there are good waves for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with the best waves coming in a northeasterly direction. You also have to be careful of the rocks on the right-hand side when entering, as some of them are submerged at high tide. Breakwaters on the right-hand side should also be avoided. There is enough space on the beach to set up the kite and rig. The waves usually develop at 20 knots and above, although anything over 25 knots is fun.

2. Kühlungsborn-Ost / Boat Harbour :

I wouldn't have believed it myself; as a local from Wismar, I have the opportunity to surf really good waves in the Baltic Sea on some days. No Spain or the Canary Islands, right on my doorstep ;)

Kübo-Ost makes it possible. The large, rocky harbor pier largely absorbs small choppy waves, allowing larger waves to break in separate sections. A strong northwest wind is needed for this beautiful wave spectacle, with the first nice waves arriving at around 22 knots. I've experienced days when waves of up to 3.5 m were possible in Kühlungsborn. The big ones broke incredibly cleanly and were really nice to ride for a small Baltic Sea. Definitely comparable to good North Sea spots. On days with strong northwest winds, the entire surfing scene from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin, and Brandenburg descends on Kübo. There's a parking lot on site, although you won't be able to get in with your large campervan or van with a body kit. Small vans will fit through the barrier, though. On some busy days, it's possible to ask the farmer if you can camp on his field for a small fee and even spend the night.

And a little tip: You can watch a livestream of the spot, which shows you whether the waves are good or whether there's enough wind... how cool is that ;)

Kühlungsborn has developed into a hub for surfing enthusiasts, and the community is characterized by friendliness and openness. The local surf schools regularly organize events where surfers can exchange ideas, welcome newcomers, and share the love of surfing. At Kühlungsborn's marina , you'll also find pleasant restaurants, bars, and shopping opportunities. The VIELMEER Kühlungsborn is definitely worth a visit, and also features live music in the summer.

Surf school and sustainable surfing in Kühlungsborn

For visitors or beginners who don't bring their own equipment, there are rental shops in the area offering high-quality surfboards and wetsuits. The surfing community in Kühlungsborn is aware of its environmental impact. There are coastal cleanup initiatives, and local surf schools (e.g.,Ocean Blue Watersports ) are committed to connecting surfing and the environment. An awareness of protecting the marine environment is deeply rooted in Kühlungsborn's surf culture.

Conclusion

Kühlungsborn may not have the gigantic waves of the more famous surfing destinations, but its inviting beaches right in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, two great surf spots, and a friendly surfing community make it a prime spot for surfers of all levels in strong winds. Grab your board and experience the magic of the Baltic Sea in Kühlungsborn—a hidden gem for surfers, kitesurfers, and windsurfers in strong northeasterly winds!
